Hi,

I installed MyEclipse 8.0 via myeclipse-8.0.0-win32.exe the other day. Now I’d like to add

– MyLyn, Version: mylyn-3.3.0-e3.4.zip

and

– Visual Editor. Version: VE-Update-1.4.0.zip

Unfortunately both add’s do result in installation errors as of compatibility reasons.

Where can I get a compatible version from?

MyLyn is available from – http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/tools/mylyn/update-archive/3.3.0/v20091015-0500/mylyn-3.3.0.v20091015-0500-e3.4.zip
The following are the steps to install
1. Download the zip file from the above link and extract it to some folder.
2. From the IDE go to Help > Software Update > Add/Remove Software
3. Click Add and in the next page of the wizard, click “Add Local” and browse to the folder containing /features /plugin and site.xml.
4. The wizard will guide you through the next steps.
When asked to restart, restart MyEclipse.
For Visual Editor(http://wiki.eclipse.org/VE/Update), The latest version available is compatible with eclilpse 3.5 but ME8.0
is based on eclipse 3.5.1 This can cause dependency conflicts. You will have to wait for a compatible version

We do need Visual Editor in some of our projects, so ME 8.0 is for the moment not the tool of our choice. Unfortunately I spent a bunch of time to check this out. Where can I find information about facts like this – incompatibilities et al – in advance, just to save time and money?

Can you send some screen shots showing the error? You can use the PM button at the end of the post.
Can you go to MyEclipse > Installation Summary > Installation Details and copy paste your installation details?
Also give us your pulse handshake id (pulse.handshake.id) from ~\Genuitec\Common\configuration\pulse2.properties.
Do you get the same error when trying to reinstall Mylyn?

Where can I find information about facts like this – incompatibilities et al – in advance

Anytime I try to install mylyn, first or repeated, I will get the same error.

Good for you to know: My computer is connected to the internet via proxy. The proxy will only allow connection to
– *.eclipse.org
– *.myeclipse.com
– http://www.poweredbypulse.com

Meanwhile I found out, that any installation of any software will stop at that point. So maybe there is an internet connection call to be made at some point of the installation that will be done for any software installation that will fail.

Can you set up your proxy details from the MyEclipse IDE menu option – Window > Preferences > General > Network Connections.
After setting those values, can you try to install MyLyn.

Got you.
And got MyLyn working.

1. uninstalled and then newly installed MyEclipse 8.0.0
2. made eclipse automatically set up network connections. eclipse found and configured a native connection – which seems to be the internet explorer configured thing.
3. Started MyEclipse 8.0 with “show dashboard at system start” set to true
4. MyEclipse would show the update dialogue, having an uninstalled MyLyn task
5. pressed th “Install”-Button on that Mylyn installation task
6. got MyLyn installed

So in the end it was
– an automatically detected network connection
– the dashboard provided installation – other than the recommended one –
to solve the problem.
