MartinMemberHi *,
I searched the internet, Eclipse and MyEclipse forums, but didn’t found a solution.
My problem is this: when I use the update manager and go to Help -> Software Updates (MyEclipse 7.0M2) the dialog displays in the site panel “Pending …” and the bottom line of the eclipse window says “Fetching children of …itories: (0%)” with the green progress bar. After a while – let’s say 5 minutes – it says (6%). I didn’t stood waiting for the (100%) by now.
Update Manager was always slow in eclipse for me (I am sitting behind a firewall and must use a proxy which saves the complete downloaded files and runs a virus check on them before delivering them to my computer). But update manager has accelerated in eclipse ganymede, but slowed down in MyEclipse 7.0M2.
I really don’t need update manager at all for installing plugins from the internet. With older eclipse versions I installed them from downloaded sites. But now, when choosing “Add Site in the dialog”, I can choose a local directory, which freezes MyEclipse completely. I suppose, the “add site”-stuff waits for the “fetching children..”-stuff to complete. Killing the process is the only remedy in this case.
Any hints on how to make this faster? Or stop the “fetching children…” stuff to add a site manually?
Regards,
Martin.
Riyad KallaMemberMartin,
Unfortunately the update manager is a complete slave to the speed of the mirrors you are pulling from. I *have* seen the behavior you are seeing before when I’ve checked the “Automatically select a mirror” button AND the update manager has selected a bunch of crappy mirrors, it can take a long-long time. This isn’t a MyEclipse issue, the update manager is completely untouched in 7.0M2, it’s an issue of how many plugins are pre-installed and all have updated to be checked for over a default plain Eclipse installed… there is just a lot more stuff to check.
I don’t have any great workarounds for you besides letting it finish (fire it off and then set about your working day). The good news is that this is all going to change in MyEclipse 7.0 and will be much faster and a bit more streamlined for adding things in MyEclipse (in 7.1 it will be even more streamlined make it a very slick experience).
MartinMemberThanks, rkalla, for your prompt answer. MyEclipse online support seems to be much faster than eclipse automatic updates. If waiting for 7.0 will ease the pain, I will await it and be releived.
Riyad KallaMemberMartin,
Thanks for hanging in there. -
